CIPPIC and Carleton University’s Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre [1] have proposed the creation of a Traditional Knowledge open licensing scheme to help overcome some of the challenges associated with granting and obtaining permission for the use and sharing of traditional knowledge. The scheme envisions a series of open licenses - similar to Creative Commons [2] licenses - responsive to the needs of granting communities that help overcome some of the obstacles parties routinely encounter in granting and obtaining permission for the use and sharing of traditional knowledge.
